Cardiologist Howard H. Weitz, M.D., director, Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, director, of the Jefferson Heart Institute, has been presented with the Laureate Award by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP). The award recognizes Dr. Weitz’s exceptional service to his patients, community and his profession.

“I’m honored,” said Weitz. “Having worked with the ACP for many years it is very satisfying to be recognized by my peers with such a prestigious award.”

Known nationally as an outstanding clinician and educator, Dr. Weitz has been a member of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association and the American College of Physicians Task Force on Clinical Competence and Training since 1998. He has also been instrumental in the setting of standards in several cardiovascular specialties.

Dr. Weitz has been at Jefferson for over 30 years. Over those three decades he has received numerous awards and honors such as being named one of “America’s Top Doctors” and being included as one of Philadelphia magazine’s “Top Docs,” as well as “Teacher of the Year” in the Department of Medicine in 1989 and 2002. Also, he was elected an Alumnus Member to Alpha Omega Alpha in 1988.

In 2005, Dr. Weitz was one of only three physicians appointed to serve on the Federal Advisory Commission to identify opportunities to stabilize and strengthen Medicaid. In addition to being a widely-published author on cardiovascular disease and esteemed teacher, Dr. Weitz maintains an active practice at the Jefferson Heart Institute.
