Bob Etemad, M.D., has been named the new director of Therapeutic Endoscopy in the Jefferson Digestive Disease Institute of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Etemad most recently comes from the Oschner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he was the chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as well as the medical director of Endoscopy for nearly four years. Prior to serving in Louisiana, he was director of Endosonography at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed an extra fellowship, in addition to his gastroenterology fellowship, focusing on advanced endoscopic procedures at the Medical University of South Carolina. His residency was at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and his medical training at Temple University School of Medicine.

“Dr. Etemad’s vast expertise will be a major asset to the Jefferson Digestive Disease Institute,” said Dr. Anthony J DiMarino, M.D., chief, Division of Gastroenterolgy and Hepatology.  “Working in our new endoscopy suite, Dr. Etemad, will be able to provide patients with the best care in a state-of-the-art facility.”

Dr. Etemad’s focus will be on management of patients requiring complex endoscopic procedures including Endoscopic Retrograde Cannulation of the Pancreatic/Bilary tract, cholangioscopy and endoscopic ultrasound. Patients served will include those with gastrointestinal malignancies, suspected malignancies, pancreatic cysts, chronic pancreatitis and similar problems.

His research in the last several years has focused on chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, which he plans on continuing at Jefferson.

Dr. Etemad was born and raised in the Philadelphia area growing up in Villanova and attending Swarthmore College. He and his wife, a dentist, currently live in Villanova with their three children.
