Joseph M. Montella, M. D. has been an attending physician at Jefferson Medical College and on staff at Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital since 1989, when he started the Division of Urogynecology. He graduated summa cum laude and first in his graduating
class from the University of Scranton with a B.S in Biology, then went on to receive his medical degree from Jefferson Medical
College where he was elected as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. He completed his residency
in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital then went on to complete a fellowship in Urogynecology
at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Montella has been active in the American Urogynecologic Society since 1990, has
been a member of its executive committee since 1997, and is currently President of the Society. He has written and spoken
extensively on the topics of urinary incontinence and prolapse and serves as a reviewer for several gynecologic journals.
He has also received numerous teaching awards from both the residents and medical students at Jefferson, culminating with
the receipt of the Dean’s Citation for Significant Contributions to the Advancement of Education at Jefferson Medical College
in 2005. He is also Medical Director of Women’s Medical Specialties, serving as liaison between the physician and non-physician
staff at the practice office. Dr. Montella is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is Associate Professor of Obstetrics
and Gynecology.
Carmen J. Sultana, M.D.
Associate Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Sultana received her B.A. Degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1982, and her M.D. degree from New York University
School of Medicine in 1986. She completed her residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1990, followed by a Fellowship
in pelvic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 1991. She is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1993), and was in
faculty practice at University Hospitals of Cleveland from 1991 through 1995. Dr. Sultana has held academic appointments at
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and at University Hospitals of Cleveland. At Jefferson she is Associate
Professor, Program Director of the Residency Program, and Head of Education in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
as well as Chief of Gynecology. She is a member of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the American
Urogynecologic Society on whose Education Committee she served, and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons. She has published
and spoken on the topics of urinary incontinence, menopause, general gynecology, and residency education and is a reviewer
for several gynecologic journals. Dr. Sultana has been an Examiner for the American Board of OB/GYN since 2001.
