Jefferson Center for Maternal-Fetal Health

State-of-the-Art Ultrasound Procedures

The Center for Maternal-Fetal Health at Jefferson houses four ultrasound rooms equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. A team of highly trained registered sonographers with extensive experience in high-risk obstetrics perform all sonograms which are interpreted by our staff of perinatologists. The perinatologist reviews the results of all sonograms and ultrasound images with the patient. The final report is faxed to the referring physician the same day of the visit. A wide array of ultrasound procedures are performed in the Center, including dating, viability, growth, Level II, fetal echocardiography, fetal Doppler, biophysical profile, amniocentesis, CVS, first trimester screening for Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18, fetal anomaly diagnosis and management.

Our ultrasound lab achieved AIUM accreditation in 2005.  AIUM accreditation provides a good measure of reassurance for patients. This accreditation is the hallmark of an ultrasound practice that meets nationally accepted standards of patient care, demonstrates consistent excellence, and is current with the latest ultrasound technology.

In collaboration with the genetic counselor and our staff perinatologists, the Center for Maternal-Fetal Health at Jefferson offers early pregnancy consultation, diagnosis, and management of multi-fetal pregnancies. When there are two or more fetuses, many complex genetic, obstetric, and social issues are confronted, and our staff is prepared to assist the parents in dealing with all of these.  After counseling, we offer early genetic diagnosis through high resolution ultrasound imaging and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS).  When requested, we also offer fetal reduction, in order to optimize the outcome of the pregnancy.  Jefferson has been a world-reknown leader in these specialized services for many years.  For further information about Multi-fetal pregnancy management, contact the genetic counseling office at Thomas Jefferson University at (215) 955-0408.
