Advanced Medicine, Superior Care for High-Risk Pregnancies
The outcome of most high-risk pregnancies today can be improved significantly with skilled intervention. Perinatologists (specialists
in high-risk pregnancy) at the Center for Maternal-Fetal Health at Jefferson can help you manage or reduce possible complications
if you fall into any of the following risk categories:
- Are 35 years or older at the time of delivery
- Have a disease, such as cancer, lupus, diabetes, hypertension or asthma
- Are carrying a baby with abnormalities
- Suffered previous pregnancy losses
- Are at risk of delivering prematurely
- Have been exposed to environmental toxins or potentially harmful medications during pregnancy
- Carry a genetic disease such as Tay-Sachs or cystic fibrosis
- Have a multiple pregnancy
- Suffer a drug addiction
- Experience sensory motor disabilities
- Have experienced problems with previous pregnancies
Our perinatologists have a vast range of experience in evaluating and treating genetic problems, pregnancy complications and
birth defects. As specialists affiliated with a renowned academic health center, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, our
physicians have more combined years of practice in maternal-fetal medicine than you'll find at any other healthcare facility
in the area. The Hospital has been voted one of the best in the nation for Obstetrics-Gynecology by U.S.News & World Report.
We work as partners with your obstetrician. Our perinatologists are pleased to provide consultation with any obstetrician
you select regardless of the physician's hospital affiliation. Or, we can help you find a top-notch obstetrician at Jefferson
University Hospital to deliver your baby and work closely with us in your care.
Largest Team, Combined With the Most Experience
We have more perinatologists at the Center for Maternal-Fetal Health at Jefferson than at any other high-risk pregnancy practice
in the region. Physicians on our staff consistently appear in the "Top Doctors" list for women compiled by Philadelphia Magazine. Working closely with our perinatologists is a dedicated team of obstetricians, genetics professionals, neonatologists and
nurse specialists.
Further, we are one of only few healthcare providers in the region affiliated with the Maternal-Fetal Network of the National
Institutes of Health. As a member of this network, our patients benefit from exclusive opportunities to participate in promising
clinical studies involving leading-edge diagnostic and treatment methods. In addition, the Center for Maternal-Fetal Health
at Jefferson is one of only a handful of healthcare facilities in the nation with recognized expertise in multiple birth diagnosis
and management.
We also stand out as the only hospital in the Delaware Valley with the capability of providing intensive care for both newborns
and high-risk mothers through our partnership with the DuPont Hospital for Children. If you choose to deliver your baby at
Jefferson University Hospital, you have the comfort of knowing you will not be separated from your newborn if he or she requires
critical care following delivery.
Convenience & Comfort
Above all, the comfort of our patients is important to us. We do everything possible to keep patients out of the hospital
until they are ready to deliver. When needed, we even have technology which enables us to monitor women at home for premature
labor or diabetes.
It is not necessary to deliver your baby at Jefferson University Hospital to be a patient in our program. We are happy to
work as a partner with any obstetrician you choose, regardless of his or her hospital affiliation. We will provide consultative
services to your obstetrician as needed about prenatal care or genetic and antenatal testing.
