Jefferson, in affiliation with Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, is designated as one of the nation's 14 Model Spinal Cord Injury Centers by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) in the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), and the only one in the Delaware Valley.

The center, which has treated more than 3,000 persons with spinal cord injury, provides for the multidisciplinary coordination of emergency and acute medical/surgical care, rehabilitation beginning at the onset of acute care, vocational-evaluation and training, and lifetime follow-up care for persons with spinal cord injury. With over 50 percent of persons with spinal cord injury admitted within three days of injury, the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center has demonstrated a mortality rate of 5 percent and has significantly reduced the severe secondary complications of traumatic spinal cord injury.

The Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley (RSCICDV) would like to congratulate 6 of their physicians whose exemplary care and expertise has placed them on the 2009 Philadelphia Magazines Top Docs list.

A special acknowledgement goes to Mendel Kupfer, MD and Ashwini D. Sharan, MD who were listed on the "Regions Rising Stars" - our best physicians age 40 and under. Read the article.
