Although psychiatric and neurological diseases such as depression and dementia can occur in later life, much can be done to
treat or manage these disorders when properly diagnosed. For example, memory loss can be a symptom of a wide range of diseases
such as depression, delirium, or thyroid dysfunction, yet misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease. Or, treatable symptoms of memory
loss and confusion are dismissed as “normal” aging. Clearly, accurate diagnosis and proper treatment can prevent needless
suffering.
Our program’s outpatient and inpatient services are dedicated exclusively to caring for the unique psychiatric and neurological
disorders of older adults. When personality and behavioral change, or decline in mental ability signal the need for medical
attention, patients and families can be assured of expert diagnosis and individualized, state-of-the-art treatment.
