Where Science and Caring Bring Hope for a Smoke-free Future
Smoking is a complex behavioral, biochemical and social issue. It’s not as simple as breaking a bad habit, and it’s certainly
not just about will power.
Scientific studies have proven that nicotine fundamentally changes the way the brain functions.
For many people, it takes time, training, and insight, combined with medical treatment and a supportive atmosphere, to overcome
the powerfully addictive properties of nicotine.
Our General Mission
The Center has been treating smokers using a multidisciplinary medical model since July of 1998. Our faculty have engaged
in several research projects and a number of educational programs throughout the region. As a result of our encouraging experience,
the scope of The Center’s mission has expanded to include:
- Promote the identification, support and treatment of nicotine addicted patients of all ages.
- Identify and eliminate disparities in education, access, and effective treatment between demographic groups, including minority
and disadvantaged sub-populations.
- Prevent initiation of tobacco use among our youth, in all of its forms, and encourage healthy alternatives to tobacco use.
- Provide a centralized means for encouraging and supporting tobacco related research activities.
- Disseminate current scientific knowledge about nicotine dependence and smoking cessation to patients and physicians within
the community.
