The department of radiology has three primary missions: clinical service, education, and research. Chief requisites for success
in these roles are the proper equipment and facilities and first-rate faculty.
The Department of Radiology offers full service, comprehensive and state-of-the-art imaging examinations totaling over 325,000
examinations per year. While our facilities continue to grow, currently, the department's equipment consists of 10 high field
MRI units (which include two 3T MRI scanners), 2 open MRI units, 6 multislice CT scanners (which include 2 sixty four detector
scanners), a PET scanner, a PET/CT scanner, 4 all-digital angiographic suites, 3 fluoroscopy rooms, 30 ultrasound scanners,
8 nuclear medicine cameras, 11 general radiographic rooms, 5 portable x-ray units, 6 digital mammography units, and 1 stereotactic
core breast biopsy device. Most of this equipment is housed on the Jefferson campus, but some is located at three outpatient
imaging centers, which are operated by the department.
Of course, equipment can take us only so far. People are what make that equipment produce the necessary results. I'm very
proud of the high quality of our faculty, staff, and also of the residents and fellows we've been able to attract consistently
to our training programs. We currently have nine clinical divisions, and every one of them is characterized by strength and
depth in the clinical, research, and educational spheres. Many of our faculty members are national leaders in their fields.
The faculty consists of 46 attending radiologists and five more in full-time research - three in physics and other basic aspects
of diagnostic imaging, one in radiopharmaceutical drug development, and one in health economics research.
