The Amputee Program is a comprehensive approach to the care and rehabilitation of individuals with amputations. A team of
rehabilitation specialists evaluates and prescribes prosthetic devices for those with amputations from a variety of causes.
This team includes an attending physiatrist, physical therapist, physiatry residents, prosthetists from several of the area
orthotic/prosthetic manufacturers and a counselor from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. The care of the amputee begins
even before surgery with a preoperative evaluation by the physiatry staff, a rehabilitation psychologist and physical therapists.
This care includes assessing and treating the patient as well as teaching the patient what to expect postoperatively. The
goal of the treatment is to return patients with amputations to their highest level of physical capability.
