Robotic Surgery

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals continues the tradition of setting standards in surgery with expertise in robotic surgery. Our surgeons have performed thousands of procedures using the da Vinci® robot to treat a variety of conditions.

Today, we are one of only a select few in the Philadelphia area to own the da Vinci Si Robot. This provides our surgeons with enhanced high-definition 3D vision for a superior field of vision during surgery.

What is Robotic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is similar to other minimally invasive surgical procedures in that surgeons make small incisions in which they can insert their instruments and cameras. The difference is that with this breakthrough technology, surgeons can now perform more complex surgeries due to the capabilities of the da Vinci® platform.

During a procedure, your surgeon is seated comfortably at a console looking at the surgical area using high definition 3D images. This provides greater visualization, dexterity and precision for delicate procedures. They then use hand and foot controls to move the surgical arms to perform the procedure.

This technology requires highly skilled surgeons who have extensive experience using the robot technology - and that is what you will get here at Jefferson.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

As a patient, the potential benefits of robotic surgery are many. They can include:

Cardiothoracic Surgery

If you or someone you care for needs a mitral valve repair; or is diagnosed with a mediastinal mass or cysts; or if you are suffering from myasthenia gravis, turn to the experienced and highly skilled surgeons at Jefferson's Cardiothoracic Surgery Program in Philadelphia for treatment.

Traditional surgical approaches for these conditions involves opening the chest which results in a long and painful recovery as well as a larger scar. At Jefferson, our surgeons can perform these procedures robotically. Jefferson surgeons were the first to perform a robotic mitral valve repair in Philadelphia.
