  Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience   Methodist Hospital Division

Founded in 1825, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is today a member of the Jefferson Health System. Services are delivered at four locations – in Center City Philadelphia, at the Methodist Hospital Division in South Philadelphia, at the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (9th & Walnut Streets, in Center City Philadelphia) and at Jefferson HealthCARE – Voorhees, New Jersey, an outpatient facility. Together, the Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals have 932 acute care patient beds, 180 subacute and long-term care beds, and major programs for a wide range of clinical specialties.

Jefferson has been selected consistently by U.S.News & World Report and Consumer’s Choice to be among America’s Best Hospitals and now by Solucient as one of the top major teaching hospitals in the United States.

In Center City Philadelphia, Jefferson Hospital provides sophisticated diagnostics, therapeutic radiology, acute rehabilitation and clinical laboratory services. Inpatient services include specialized programs in: cardiology, cardiac and cardiac surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, oncology, radiation oncology, orthopedics, renal, liver and pancreas transplantation, microsurgery of various types, nuclear medicine, high-risk neonatal and perinatal care and pediatric services. The nationally renowned Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson University Hospital is designated as a clinical cancer center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Jefferson Hospital's Level I Regional Resource Trauma has been designated by the National Institute of Handicapped Research as a Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center. Other programs with a national reputation at Jefferson Hospital include breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiac angioplasty, medical genetics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, treatment of joint and musculoskeletal disorders, hip replacement, urology and treatment of skin and colorectal cancers. Jefferson Hospital provides rehabilitation services in a rehabilitation or acute care hospital, in the home and in various outpatient settings. Jefferson Hospital also offers: visiting nurses, community home support, infusion therapy, applied technology, family support and hospice, through Jefferson Home Health.

In the year 2000 alone, Jefferson Health System facilities admitted more than 38,000 inpatients and attended to 75,000 emergency patients. Many outpatients are seen at the various facilities. More than 4,500 physicians, nurses, technologists and supporting staff serve the needs of the people who come to the Jefferson system for their healthcare needs.

Jefferson continues to take pride in the quality and variety of healthcare services provided to citizens of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, while offering rich and varied learning experiences for the students of the University. Jefferson is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and licensed by the Department of Health of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

From the earliest days, clinical facilities have been the primary setting for the learning experience of Jefferson students. Jefferson Hospital, as a university teaching hospital, has traditionally provided this clinical setting. Within the hospital, nursing and allied health students, medical students, technologists, scientists and resident and attending physicians learn to work together as a team.
