Message from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the Specialized Residency in Cardiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. This residency is designed to develop clinicians through application of the knowledge and skills necessary to practice as a cardiology pharmacy specialist. The focus of the residency program is clinical practice, involving experiences with multiple inpatient cardiology services, outpatient cardiology clinics, and the heart transplant service. Residents will develop skills in managing drug therapy for patients with multiple disease states being affected by or affecting the cardiovascular system, education of pharmacy, medical, and nursing students and performing clinical research. The program is extremely flexible and elective experiences can be chosen to complement the individual resident’s career goals.

Throughout the residency year you will have the opportunity to:

• Provide pharmaceutical care to patients utilizing cardiovascular pharmacotherapy.
• Serve as secretary of the Cardiology and Thrombosis Subcommittee of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
• Serve as a member of the Code Blue Committee, participate on the Code Blue team, and prepare pharmacists for ACLS certification.
• Monitor compliance with pharmacy protocols involving cardiovascular agents.
• Conduct a drug use evaluation to determine the appropriateness of cardiovascular therapy.
• Provide an ACPE-accredited continuing education seminar to pharmacy staff.
• Present at Cardiology Grand Rounds.
• Participate in learning activities (lectures, preceptorship, etc) for pharmacy, nursing and medical students.
• Design, conduct, and present a research project.
• Prepare and submit a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
• Develop and enhance professional skills (time and stress management, written and verbal communication).

In addition to the clinical component of the program there is a required service component that extends the residency commitment beyond the forty-hour week. Much of the service experience is spent serving as pharmacist-in-charge; performing the administrative functions and overseeing the clinical services provided by the department.

The residency will begin around July 1st. As an accredited PGY2 program, this Residency is listed with the ASHP Residency Matching Program. Selected applicants will be contacted for interviews in late January and throughout February. Qualified candidates must have completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY1) or possess equivalent work experience.
