PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Critical Care
Message from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the Specialized Residency in Critical Care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. This residency is designed to develop clinicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice as a critical care pharmacy specialist. The focus of the residency program is clinical practice, involving experiences with multiple interdisciplinary critical care teams in a variety of ICU environments. Residents will develop skills in managing drug therapy for patients with multiple disease states in the critical care setting; educating pharmacy, medical, and nursing students; and participating in clinical research. The program is extremely flexible and elective experiences can be chosen to complement the individual resident’s career goals.
Throughout the residency year you will have the opportunity to:
- Provide pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients in a variety of environments
- Serve as secretary of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Subcommittee of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
- Conduct a medication use evaluation to determine the appropriateness of medications used in the critical care realm
- Provide an ACPE-accredited continuing education program to pharmacy staff
- Participate in learning activities (lectures, preceptorship, etc) for pharmacy, nursing, and medical students
- Provide learning activities to physicians and nurses at all levels of training, including formal and informal inservices to medical teams
- Design, conduct, and present a research project
- Design, research, and present a poster suitable for presentation at a professional meeting
- Prepare and submit a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal
- Attend professional conferences related to critical care
- Become involved in national and local professional organizations
- Develop and enhance personal skills, including time and stress management as well as written and verbal communication
In addition to the clinical component of the program, there is a required service component that extends the residency commitment beyond the forty-hour week. Much of the service experience is spent serving as pharmacist-in-charge; performing the administrative functions and overseeing the clinical services provided by the department.
The residency will begin around July 1st. As an accredited PGY2 program, this Residency is listed with the ASHP Residency Matching Program. Selected applicants will be contacted for interviews in late January and throughout February. Qualified candidates must have completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY1).
Again, thank you for your interest in our program. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or for further information.
Sincerely,
Cara McDaniel, Pharm.D., BCPS
