Mission
The goal of this PGY2 Residency in Drug Information is to provide an intensive training experience in all facets of drug information and medication policy development.

About the Program
The drug information residency program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital was established in 1982. This specialized residency program was the second to be accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). Jefferson's Drug Information Center responds to approximately 250 calls per month from healthcare professionals within the Jefferson Health System. The Center staff review and respond to adverse drug events (ADEs) reported to the hosptial. The drug information staff, including residents, coordinate activities of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee and its subcommittees, facilitate the development of Medication Use Policies, educate pharmacy and medical staff, and oversee the formulary management process.

Hospital-track - The majority of the residency consists of activities stemming from the Drug Information Center. The residents' activities encompass drug information, clinical and administrative responsibilities. These include:

  • Responding to drug information requests from healthcare professionals
  • Assisting in coordination of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and its Subcommittees
  • Developing and implementing Medical Staff medication use policies
  • Conducting a Drug Usage Evaluation
  • Conducting a Research Project
  • Lecturing at the College of Allied Health Sciences, Thomas Jefferson University
  • Serving as a preceptor to PharmD students from the Jefferson School of Pharmacy (JSP), the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and Temple University School of Pharmacy
  • Investigating and documenting adverse drug reactions
  • Preparing written medication information and editing the work of others
  • Participating in pharmacoeconomic evaluations
  • Practicing in the Investigational Drug Service Pharmacy
  • Paticipating in The Joint Commission continual survey readiness process

Requirements for Admission - Candidates must have a PharmD degree and be eligible for licensure in the State of Pennsylvania. Applicants for this specialized residency must possess good interpersonal and communication skills. Completion of a pharmacy practice residency or equivalent experience is required. Candidates are required to be registered with the Residency Matching Program.
