Message from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Specialized Residency in Drug Information at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The residency offers a special opportunity to train with an experienced and recognized staff of drug information specialists. The information on the website is intended to furnish a general description of our department and our program. If you desire further information, we will be happy to answer any questions you may have or put you in contact with some of our current or former residents.

The Residency in Drug Information was developed in 1982 to provide an intensive training experience in provision of evidence-based medical information, medication policy development and medication safety. The residency has been accredited by the ASHP since 1985. Our alumni hold major positions within academic, industry and institutional settings. Additionally, several of our alumni are enjoying successful careers in various areas of medical writing and marketing.

The residency is flexible, permitting us to individualize the emphasis to meet the desires of the resident. Activities of the resident encompass medical information, clinical and administrative responsibilities. These include:

  • Responding to drug information requests from healthcare professionals
  • Assisting in coordination of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and its Subcommittees
  • Serving as recording secretary of a P&T subcommittee
  • Developing and implementing medication use policies
  • Completing a residency project
  • Editing manuscripts prepared by others
  • Precepting pharmacy students from Thomas Jefferson University, JSP, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and Temple University School of Pharmacy
  • Practicing in the Investigational Drug Service Pharmacy
  • Performing pharmacokinetic consults and antibiotic approvals
  • Participating in the ADE tracking, evaluating, and reporting process
  • Evaluating promotional materials from pharmaceutical manufacturers
  • Participating in health economic activities
  • Developing, conducting, and presenting a Drug Use Evaluation
  • Preparing and presenting an ACPE-accredited continuing education lecture
  • Participating in the Joint Commission continual survey readiness process
The amount of time spent in each of these areas is dependent upon the resident's individual interests. The resident is also encouraged to suggest other experiences. There is a required service component that extends the residency commitment beyond the forty-hour week. Much of the staffing experience is spent serving as pharmacist-in-charge with the residents primarily performing administrative functions and clinical services provided by the department.

The Residency will begin on or about July 1. As an accredited PGY2 program, the Residency is listed with the ASHP Residency Matching Program. We request your completed application by January 15.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the Residency in Drug Information. We look forward to speaking with you and will supply any additional information you may require.

Sincerely,

Cindy J. Wordell, B.S., Pharm.D.
