Message from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Specialized Residency in Infectious Diseases at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. This residency is designed to develop clinicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice as infectious disease specialists. The focus of the residency program is clinical practice, involving experiences with inpatient Infectious Disease consult services, outpatient HIV clinic, and bone marrow transplant services. Residents will develop skills in antimicrobial management and outcomes assessment, education of pharmacy and medical students, and clinical research. The program is extremely flexible and elective experiences can be chosen to complement the individual resident’s career goals.
Throughout the residency year you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide pharmaceutical care to patients utilizing infectious disease pharmacotherapy.
  • Observe different methods of antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Serve as secretary of the Infectious Disease Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommittee.
  • Coordinate the antimicrobial surveillance activities of the department through the targeted antibiotic program.
  • Conduct a drug use evaluation to determine the appropriateness of antimicrobial therapy.
  • Learn methods of infection control surveillance and reporting.
  • Provide an ACPE-accredited continuing education seminar to pharmacy staff.
  • Participate in learning activities (lectures, preceptorship, etc) for pharmacy and medical students.
  • Design, conduct, and present a research project.
  • Prepare and submit a manuscript for publication in a peer reviewed journal.
  • Attend professional conferences related to infectious diseases.
  • Develop and enhance professional skills (time and stress management, written and verbal communication).

In addition to the clinical component of the program there is a required service component that extends the residency commitment beyond the forty-hour week. Much of the service experience is spent serving as pharmacist-in-charge; performing the administrative functions and overseeing the clinical services provided by the department.

The residency will begin around July 1st. As an accredited PGY2 program, the Residency is listed with the ASHP Residency Matching Program. Selected applicants will be contacted for interviews in late January and througout February. Qualified candidates must have completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY1) or possess equivalent work experience.

Again, thank you for your interest in our program. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or for further information.

Sincerely,
