Mike, Ultrasound

After Mike was discharged from his service in the U.S. Navy, First Marine Division as a hospital corpsman, he knew he wanted to stay in the medical field. He trained as a general diagnostic X-ray technologist and worked as one for about 5 years when he was offered the chance to learn how to use a new technology, ultrasound. It was 1975, ultrasound was just being introduced, and Mike was sent to train in a program being run by Barry Goldberg, MD, at Episcopal Hospital. Two years later, there was an opening in Jefferson's newly developing Ultrasound Division under the direction of Dr. Goldberg. Mike was hired and has been here ever since.

"Since I first started, I've seen so many changes in the field of ultrasound—rapid changes," Mike recalls. "When I go back to what we originally used to do, 27 years ago, it is like being in the Stone ages compared to what we do now." He adds, "What I like about being here at Jefferson is that we have access to state-of-the art equipment—that's a biggie. And we have a very large number of machines."
