Jefferson Aortic Center
Clinical Trials
Our clinical trials focus on aortic aneurysms of the chest, aortic dissection and other complex aneurysms. Given that many
patients with these problems are 65 and older, these trials focus on refining minimally invasive techniques that allow aortic
reconstruction from within the arteries. This approach allows patients, who would have otherwise had a large incision and
lengthy hospitalization, to be discharged as soon as the next day after surgery and with very little pain.
While open surgeries are still sometimes necessary, the center’s team exhausts every possibility to deliver a minimally invasive
approach. When patients do require open surgery, they benefit again from the multidisciplinary approach involving vascular
surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology which ensures that a comprehensive and coordinated plan of care is delivered.

Aortic Dissection
STABLE Trial OPEN SitePrincipal Investigator: Paul J. DiMuzio, MD, FACS
The STABLE trial is a multinational dissection study for the treatment of acute thoracic aortic dissection. This study will
explore procedures that cover the tear and support blood flow via a stent that holds the natural wall open. This condition
has plagued surgeons for decades- the lining of the aorta is extremely delicate and difficult to repair with open surgery.
If successful, the mortality rate is still about 50 percent. This new procedure offers many benefits without having to cut
open the aorta itself. Jefferson is the only center in Philadelphia currently offering this technology.
Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms
STARZ Trial ENROLLMENT IS CLOSED Site Principal Investigator: Paul J. DiMuzio, MD, FACS
The TX2 trial focuses on the treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms with endovascular technology. Jefferson is one of only
14 centers in the country currently approved to use this graft. These endovascular grafts enable surgeons at the Aortic Center
to treat aneurysms in the chest through a minimally invasive approach.
