JEFFERSON BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC SURGERY PROGRAM

Surgical Procedures

The Jefferson Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Program performs the fully laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and fully laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. We also offer fully laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy – a newer procedure that was initially used as the first of two operations to perform a gastric bypass on very high-risk patients and is now used as a single step procedure. And we’re pursuing opportunities to perform investigational and revisional procedures, as well.

At Jefferson, we’re committed to fully laparoscopic weight-loss surgery. With laparoscopy, the procedures are similar on the inside – but with less pain, shorter hospitalizations (one day for gastric banding and two days for gastric bypass versus three to five days with open surgery) and quicker recoveries for the patients. In fact, weight-loss patients who have laparoscopic surgery are able to breathe more fully and get out of bed the night of their surgery. They’re also able to do more activities at home more quickly. And laparoscopic patients experience fewer hernias and wound infections, too.

You can also learn why every surgery has risks and why laparoscopy is better than traditional “open” surgery. Finally, here’s what you and your loved ones can expect on the day of bariatric surgery.
