The Short Procedure Unit complements Jefferson's inpatient surgery programs and the outpatient resources of the Jefferson Surgical Center. The Short Procedure Unit serves as an ambulatory care area providing a wide range of medical and surgical procedures. To be admitted to the unit, the procedure being performed must be able to be completed, providing an adequate recovery time, within an eight-to-twelve-hour time span. Typically, the patient is discharged to home following the procedure.

A wide range of procedures are performed, including blood transfusion, chemotherapy, endoscopy and a variety of operations. The unit features an Outpatient Cardiac Catheterization Program, the only one of its kind in Philadelphia. For those who qualify, outpatient catheterization provides the obvious advantage of a shortened hospital stay.
