Imaging Studies at Jefferson

Our radiologists perform and interpret nearly half a million examinations per year. Here is a list of the imaging studies offered on our Center City Campus and various locations throughout the Delaware Valley.

X-rays: If you require an X-ray, you do not need to make an appointment; walk-ins are welcome. X-rays are performed at three locations:

  • 3rd Floor Gibbon
  • Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience
  • Jefferson Outpatient Imaging located at 10th and Walnut Streets

Abdominal Angiogram
An X-ray image of the blood vessels to evaluate various vascular conditions

Abdominal Ultrasound
A noninvasive procedure used to assess the organs and structures within the abdomen

Arthrogram
A type of X-ray used to examine a joint, such as the knee or hip

Bone Densitometry  
Used to measure your bone mineral content and density, which can indicate decreased bone mass

Bone Scan
Involves examining the various bones of the skeleton to identify areas of physical and chemical changes

Breast Ultrasound
A noninvasive procedure used to assess the health of the breasts

Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterization is performed to further diagnose coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, congestive heart failure and/or certain congenital (present at birth) heart conditions, such as atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect.

Cardiac Stress Test
A noninvasive exam designed to find changes in your heart while you exercise

Carotid Artery Duplex Scan
A type of vascular ultrasound study done to assess the blood flow of the arteries that supply blood from the heart through the neck to the brain

Cerebral Arteriogram
Uses X-ray and dye to visualize the blood vessels in the neck and brain for visualizing abnormalities such as narrowed blood vessels, cerebral aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation (AVM)

Chest Ultrasound
A noninvasive procedure used to assess the organs and structures within the chest, such as the lungs, aorta and esophagus

Cholecystogram
An X-ray of the gallbladder to detect the presence of gallstones and other abnormalities

CT Scan
Detailed images of the abdomen, bones, brain, chest, kidney, liver/biliary tract, pancreas or spine

DEXA Scan
Uses special X-rays to detect osteoporosis

Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Measures brain activity

Electromyogram (EMG)
Measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve's stimulation of the muscle to help detect neuromuscular abnormalities

Electronystagmography (ENG)
For the evaluation of vertigo and certain other disorders that affect hearing and vision

Fluoroscopy
Used to evaluate specific areas of the body, including the bones, muscles and joints, as well as solid organs such as the heart, lung or kidneys

Gallbladder Scan
Nuclear medicine exam used to assess the function and structure of the gallbladder

Liver Scan
Nuclear Medicine exam used to examine the liver to identify certain conditions or to assess the function of the liver

Mammogram
An X-ray examination of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast cancers, benign tumors and cysts

MRI  
To obtain visual detail of your body to help detect many conditions of the brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, bones, joints and prostate. MRIs are done through Jefferson Outpatient Imaging

MRI of the Breast
Used to obtain visual detail of the breast for certain women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer or for further evaluation of women with breast cancer

MR Perfusion
Evaluates brain function

MR Spectroscopy
For the evaluation of central nervous system disorders

Pancreas Scan
Nuclear imaging study used to detect how your pancreas is functioning

PET and PET/CT
Most commonly performed for the diagnosis, staging and restaging of tumors, and for monitoring therapy. These imaging studies are done through Jefferson Outpatient Imaging.

Videonystagmography (VNG)
Helps to determine if a vestibular (inner ear) disease is behind the cause of your balance problem
