The Jefferson Liver Transplantation Program has had a long tradition of outstanding success in the treatment of patients with
all forms of acute and chronic liver disease. Initiated in 1984, ours has been the longest continuously active Liver Transplantation
program in the Philadelphia area. In fact, the first liver transplant in the Delaware Valley was performed at Jefferson. To date more than 500 patients have been transplanted. At Jefferson we are constantly searching
for innovative therapies that can improve the quality of life for our patients. This includes investigating new anti-rejection
protocols.
Since January 1, 2003, we have been using a new drug protocol that allows for a more rapid weaning from steroids. This approach
is in line with the very latest medical research, which shows patients have fewer side effects and improved outcomes. Our
new immunosuppression regimen has produced excellent results, with short-term patient survival results well above the national
average.
Our multidisciplinary team offers patients a comprehensive approach to liver and biliary disease. Hepatologists from our well-regarded Jefferson Digestive Disease Institute in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology work in close collaboration with our team.
