Disease Signs and Symptoms

A number of diseases and conditions can cause liver problems. Many of them can be treated and do not result in the need for a liver transplant. Nonetheless, the signs and symptoms of liver problems include:

  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Very pale yellow/gray or white stools
  • Dark tea colored urine
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Growth delay or failure in children
  • Belly (abdominal) swelling
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Frequent nose bleeds
  • Constant itching
  • Changes in sleep patterns or mental status
  • Fatigue or lack of energy

  • Acute and chronic viral hepatitis
  • All forms of cirrhosis
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis
  • Alcoholic cirrhosis
  • Autoimmune hepatitis
  • Liver tumors (cancerous and benign)
  • Metabolic conditions (for example, Wilson’s disease)
  • Poisoning or damage caused by long-term substance abuse
