Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has had a long tradition of outstanding success in the treatment of patients with all
forms of acute and chronic liver disease. Initiated in 1984, ours has been the longest continuously active Liver Transplantation
program in the Philadelphia area. In fact, the first liver transplant in the Delaware Valley was performed at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Ever since its inception, the program has continued to develop. To
date more than 500 patients have been transplanted. At Jefferson we are constantly searching for innovative therapies that
can improve the quality of life for our patients. This includes investigating new anti-rejection protocols.
Since January 1, 2003, we have been using a new drug protocol that allows for a more rapid weaning from steroids. This approach
is in line with the very latest medical research, which shows patients have fewer side effects and improved outcomes. Our
new immunosuppression regimen has produced excellent results, with short-term patient survival results well above the national
average.
Cataldo Doria, MD, PhD, Director, Division of Transplant Surgery, is an internationally recognized expert in the field. Dr. Doria has personally
performed over 450 organ transplants. He has also provided advanced surgical options for individuals with end-stage liver
disease as well as benign and malignant diseases; options that have delayed or prevented the need for transplant.
Victor J. Navarro, MD, Medical Director, Liver Transplantation, has received numerous honors and awards in recognition of work in the area of liver
disease, research and transplantation. Under Dr. Navarro's leadership, Jefferson Hospital's Liver Program has developed robust
clinical and research programs in acute and chronic liver diseases.
Dr. Doria, Dr. Navarro and the Liver Transplantation and Hepato-Biliary Surgery Team offer patients a comprehensive approach to liver and biliary disease. Hepatologists from our well-regarded Jefferson Digestive Disease Institute at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology work in close collaboration with our team, as do Jefferson intensive care
specialists, gastroenterologists, nephrologists, pharmacologists, interventional radiologists, transplant anesthesiologists,
psychologists, pathologists, infectious disease specialists, nutritionists, physical therapy, and respiratory care therapists -
each focused on the liver transplant patient's successful preparation for surgery and recovery. Transplant nurse coordinators,
social workers, a transplant pharmacist and a financial counselor are there to assist patients step-by-step, from the initial
evaluation through surgery and recuperation.
Referring physicians are regularly kept informed of their patients' progress and are encouraged to actively participate in
their patients' care before and after liver transplant.
