Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair

Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at 4:30 p.m.

Replay available beginning May 21.

An aortic aneurysm is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of the aorta resulting in an abnormal widening or ballooning greater than 50 percent of its normal diameter. The larger the aneurysm becomes, the greater the risk of rupture, which can be fatal. Fortunately, aortic aneurysms can be surgically repaired to prevent rupture.

As a special educational offering, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital will provide a real-time webcast featuring an endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. Compared to open repair, this minimally invasive procedure substantially reduces patients’ post-operative discomfort and recovery time.

Joseph Lombardi, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, Jefferson Medical College, and Director of the Jefferson Aortic Center, will perform the procedure in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s state-of-the-art Endovascular OR Suite, which is equipped with Philadelphia’s most advanced imaging system. Robert Larson, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Jefferson Medical College, will narrate. You will have the opportunity to ask the physicians questions during the live webcast.

Dr. Lombardi is also the Global Principal Investigator of a multinational clinical research study of thoracic aortic dissection. This study explores minimally invasive procedures that cover the tear in the aorta, support blood flow via a stent that holds the natural wall of the aorta open, and do not require cutting open the aorta itself.

Our distinguished vascular surgeons are part of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s continuum of care for vascular disease and thrombotic disorders. The “vascular home” for this closely integrated approach to care is the Jefferson Vascular Disease Center. The center coordinates an outstanding multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiovascular/interventional radiologists and neurological surgeons, as well as the vascular surgeons at the Jefferson Aortic Center, which offers state-of-the-art treatment for aortic diseases.

Both professionals and the public may view the live webcast. Physicians may sign up to receive CME credits for viewing this webcast.

Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
